If you’re anything like me, the best part of waking up is… absolutely any kind of coffee in your cup. Not only is it a mandatory part of my morning routine, but the promise of coffee is sometimes the only thing that can pry me out of bed some mornings. However, the benefits of coffee extend beyond being a morning motivator. In fact, some of the health benefits may even encourage the more casual drinker to go for a refill!
Coffee may help lower men’s prostate cancer risk. A study published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute shows that drinking one to three cups of coffee per day can cut prostate cancer risk by up to 30 percent. Men who drink six cups of coffee a day (whoa!) have a 60 percent decreased chance of developing a dangerous form of prostate cancer.
More than 15 published studies have confirmed that the risk of Type 2 Diabetes goes down with coffee consumption as well. Many researchers cite the antioxidant-rich beverage as an effective way to control insulin. This study is one of few that doesn’t cite caffeine as the main cause of health benefits, but instead the minerals and antioxidants. This being the case, decaffeinated coffee is thought to have the same effect on Type 2 Diabetes risk.
